I. Phillip Summerville Obituary

Irvin P. “Phil” Summerville, 74, of Carbon Center, Clearfield Twp., a Vietnam veteran and clustered purple heart recipient, passed away late Monday morning, August 10, 2020 at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Irvin was born in Elfinwild, near Allison Park on June 18, 1946, he was the son of the late Irvin Dean and Isabella Marcella Hieber Summerville.

Phil was of the Presbyterian faith.  He was a 1966 graduate of Butler High School and a U.S. Army veteran, who had served in Vietnam.  Phil was wounded twice and was the recipient of a clustered purple heart.  Phil enjoyed fishing, hunting, trips to his camp, “Baby Bear”, in Fisher, and later watching hunting and fishing shows on t.v. and adding his commentary to what he was watching.  He was a member of Happy Hunter’s Club in Fenelton, Parker VFW Post #7073, and the Sportsmen’s Club in Strattanville.  Phil loved visiting the hospital every time there was a new baby.  His 28 nieces and nephews, and his many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews were Phil’s pride and joy.  They were all very special to him and he was affectionately known as “Uncle Phil”.

Phil retired 2008 following more than 27 years of service as an outside maintenance technician at the V.A. Hospital in Butler.

Phil is survived by his wife, Lou Ann “Louie” “E.A.” Weiland Summerville, whom he married at St. Wendelin Church on June 23, 1973.  Also surviving are two brothers, Fred Summerville and his wife, Kathy, of Butler, and Dean Summerville and his wife, Jessica, of West Sunbury; a sister, Evelyn Weiland of Butler; his sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Mary Kay Summerville of Chicora and Sally and Ronald Kriess of Butler, as well as his nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Summerville, a sister, Arlene Betro, two nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

A private family visitation and a blessing service with the Rev. John Butler, former pastor of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Brady’s Bend, officiating, will be held at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora.  Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in the Village of North Oakland.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.  Military honors will be accorded by members of the Chicora and Brady’s Bend American Legion Posts.  Condolences may be sent by visiting www.hilefh.com
