Sarah Melissa (McGarvey) Shaffer

Sarah Melissa (McGarvey) Shaffer, 99, formerly of Brady’s Bend, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 following complications from surgery.

Sarah was born in Brady’s Bend, Pennsylvania and most recently lived in Jenison, Michigan, but was a long-time resident of both Butler and Indiana, Pennsylvania.  While living in Indiana, she was employed as a clerk typist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania until she retired. 

Sarah is survived by a sister, Hattie Williams of Karns City, Pennsylvania, a daughter, Suzanne Strauss of Jenison, Michigan, and a son, David and his wife, Patricia, of Forked River, New Jersey. 

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kim Marshall and her husband, Darrell, of Hopkins, Michigan, Andrea Bareis of Chelsea, Michigan, Nadia Yungk of Alexandria, Virginia,  Jessica Shaffer of Manahawkin, New Jersey,  and Corey Shaffer and his wife, Ashley, of Absecon, New Jersey.

Sarah also has eight great grandchildren and a ninth great grandson is expected in November.

Preceding Sarah in death were her husband, Lee Allen, a daughter, Mary Lee, and three sisters, Madge Bowser, Alda Edwards, and Eleanor Hazlett.

Sarah was a devout Christian and has gone to be with her Savior in Heaven.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main Street, Karns City, from Noon – 2:00 p.m. Saturday. A funeral service will follow from the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev.
