H. Jean “Grandma Jean” Michael, 94, of Chicora, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Chicora Medical Center.
She was born at home in Crisswell, Armstrong County, on September 27, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Roland and Mildred Bishop Hiles.
She was a 1942 graduate of Fairview Twp. Karns City High School and in her earlier years had been employed at Penn Drake in Karns City. She was a homemaker. Concern and caring for family was her highest priority. Jean was a lifelong member of the Fairview Evangelical Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death she was the church’s oldest member. She was also a member of the Triple M Bible Class and the church choir. She was a member of the Treble Clef Music Club for many years.
Jean was married to Arthur L. Michael by the late Rev. R.C. Sherrard at the Fairview Presbyterian Church on August 16, 1947. Mr. Michael preceded her in death on July 13, 2011.
She is survived by a son, Dennis Michael and his wife, Kathy, of Chippewa Twp., a daughter, Carla Stiehler and her husband, Robert, of Karns City; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Michael and his wife, Kathy of Darlington, Bradley Michael and his wife, Holly, of Beaver, Shawn Michael and his wife, Jennifer, of Moon Twp., Eric Michael of Seven Fields, Nathan Flick of Chicora, Caralie Hertweck and her companion, Justin Hiles of Chicora, Ashley Gamble and her husband, Rob, of Butler, Amber Michael of Butler; fifteen great grandchildren, Trent, Brooke, Erika, Elizabeth, Luke, and Nola Michael, Malia, Mylie, and Gage Hertweck and Gavin Hiles, Sylas and Adalyn Flick and Hayden and Declan Gamble and Aubrey Kaplin,and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters-in-law.
Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by a son, Richard L. Michael, who died on August 14, 2010, a sister, Ruth Sigworth, and two brothers, Roland and Clayton Hiles.
Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd., Chicora, from 4 - 8 PM Wednesday. A funeral service will be held from the funeral home Thursday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Robert Miller, officiating. Interment will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia.
