Carl Barger Obituary

Carl R. “Gundy” Barger, 91, of Queenstown Rd., Karns City, a well-known Petroleum Valley resident, passed away Thursday morning, September 6, 2018 while in the company of his son and daughter at the Chicora Medical Center.

Carl was born in Chicora on September 6, 1927. He was the son of the late Vern and Annie Duespohl Barger.

He was a graduate of Fairview Twp. Karns City High School and a member of the Fairview Evangelical Presbyterian Church. In his earlier years he was employed by Corbett Builder’s Supply in Petrolia and retired from WITCO Chemical in Petrolia in 1990 following more than 25 years of service. While at WITCO, he was a member of the IAM Union.

Gundy enjoyed camping and traveling and was a well-known classic truck enthusiast and was an annual attendee at the Chicora Memorial Day Parade with his yellow and cream mint condition 1968 Ford F-250 Camper Special. Gundy also owned a maroon and red 1984 F-250. He was well-known for his expertise with his hit and miss antique gas engines and was a frequent visitor to the area’s antique engine shows, especially the Portersville Steam Show. Gundy also enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his garage.

Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Hiles Barger, and his second wife, Jean Snow Barger.

He is survived by a son, Carl L. Barger and his wife, Barb, of Karns City; two daughters, Laura Smith of Phoenix, AZ and Michelle L. Barger of Loveland, CO; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Janet Barger of Petrolia and a sister, Kay Weibel of East Brady; four grandchildren, Allie, Casey, Wendy, and Patrick, and several great grandchildren, a number of step children, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherri L. Barger Hile, and a grandson, Samuel; two brothers, Clair and Guy; a sister, Loretta, and a step daughter, Angie Snow.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main St., Karns City, from Noon – 4:00 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday from the funeral home with the Rev. David Perry, pastor of the Fairview Evangelical Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia. Memorial contributions may be made to Karns City Regional Ambulance Service, PO Box F, Chicora, PA 16025.
