Arnold Henry Freiters Sr.

Arnold Henry “Chub”  Freiters Sr., 91, of Walnut Rd., Karns City, a well-known Petroleum Valley resident and a decorated World War II veteran, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 19, 2017 shortly after his arrival at the emergency department at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Arnold was born in Petrolia on June 1, 1926.  He was son of the late Henry and Anna Otto Freiters.

He attended the Criswell School until 8th grade.  Arnold was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the 75th Infantry in the European Theatre of Operations.  He earned a Silver Star and had earned various medals and three battle stars.  In his earlier years, he had been employed by the Daugherty Refining Co. and the Pickle Works, which is now INDSPEC.  He retired following nearly 40 years of service with Witco in Petrolia.

Arnold was a member of the East Brady American Legion Post and the Petrolia Evangelical Presbyterian Church.   He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.  He enjoyed fishing, deer, fox, and coon hunting.  He was a steam engine enthusiast and enjoyed attending steam engine shows.  He was a well-known regular for supper at the Centurion Restaurant in Petrolia.  Arnold most especially enjoyed the company of his family.

Mr. Freiters was preceded in death on June 7, 1995 by his wife, Mary Idella Berry Freiters, whom he married in Miller’s Eddy on October 12, 1948.

Arnold is survived by three children, Brenda Haug and her husband, Edward C. “Skip”, of Chicora, Debbie Slagle and her husband, Dave, of Petrolia, Arnold “Arnie” Freiters, and his wife, Tammey, off Karns City; nine grandchildren, Ed Haug and his wife, Lisa, Heidi Coyle and her husband, Ray, Jarret Haug and his wife, Katie, David Slagle and his wife, Jen, Courtney Slagle (Bill Fedorek), Emily Freiters, Dylan Freiters (Hannah Kijowski), Lacey Freiters and Hanna Freiters; six great grandchildren, Meranda (James Confer), Austen and Maverick Haug, Carley, Olivia, and Cooper Coyle; three great great grandchildren, Sophia and Lydia Confer, and Mayzee Haug; two brothers, Frederick “Fritz” Freiters and his wife, Donna and Charles Freiters and his wife, Jane, all of Chicora, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; two brothers, Ludwig and Henry Freiters, and two sisters, Barbara McCollough and Birtha Freiters.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd., from 12 – 3 and 6 – 9 p.m. Sunday.  A funeral service will be held from the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Monday with the Rev. David Perry, pastor of the Petrolia Evangelical Presbyterian Church, officiating.  Interment with military honors provided by the Brady’s Bend, East Brady, and Chicora American Legion Posts will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Petrolia VFD, Box 237, Petrolia, PA 16050.    For additional information or to send a condolence, please visit www.hilefh.com.
