James V. “Jim” VanZandt, 73, of St. Petersburg, passed away Saturday evening, February 25, 2017 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.

Jim was born in Franklin on March 23, 1943.  He was the son of the late Raymond and Alice Rupert VanZandt.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR, his nephew’s races, and fishing.  Jim had a great love for his dogs.  He was well-known for riding his tractor around the St. Petersburg area.

He was married to the former Virginia Crawford on October 3, 1987.  She preceded him in death in 2011.

Jim is survived by two brothers, Wilbur VanZandt and his wife, Pat, of Rocky Grove and William VanZandt of St. Petersburg; a sister, Charlotte Dittman of St. Petersburg, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a life-long friend, Nancy Denny, of Parker.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 802 Grove St., St. Petersburg, from 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday where a funeral service will follow from the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. with Larry Michael, family friend, officiating.  Interment will be in St. Petersburg Cemetery.  For additional information or to send a condolence, please visit www.hilefh.com.
