D. Jean (Stewart) Rumbaugh

June 7, 1926 ~ January 10, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

D. Jean Rumbaugh, 90, of Emlenton, went to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Bob, Tuesday afternoon, January 10, 2017.

Jean was born on June 7, 1926 in Toby Twp.  She was the daughter of the late Lear Hamilton and Blanche L. Reese Stewart.

She was a graduate of Rimersburg High School.  She was married on October 15, 1947 in Cherry Run Methodist Church to Robert A. Rumbaugh.  Bob preceded her in death on April 16, 2001.  She traveled with Bob to various places prior to his death; and with Dolores to international as well as domestic destinations—her favorites being Hawaii, Australia, and Disney World; with Ed to Virginia Beach and Colorado, and to visit Bob in Albuquerque, NM, Great Falls, MT (Glacier National Park), Cheyenne, WY, and Yorktown, VA.  When Dolores lived in the Cleveland, OH and Denver, CO areas they were frequent visitors.

In her early years she was a homemaker, co-owner of EMCO Mills of Emlenton, and Rumbaugh’s Restaurant (formerly Ray’s Hot Dog Shop) in Emlenton.  She worked in the cafeteria in Emlenton and Foxburg Schools while her children attended.  She also worked at the bakery at IGA in Emlenton and retired from Clarion University as a custodian.  She canned, baked homemade bread, pies, and cookies.  She was a Girl Scout Leader for the Emlenton troop so that it could continue.  She loved quilting made many beautiful ones that her children, grandchildren, and some of her great grandchildren have in their possession.  Jean enjoyed all aspects of farming—milking cows, taking care of her chickens, the ponies and horse, and her pet turkeys, as well as talking to the barn cats and making hay and doing whatever was necessary for the care of the animals.  She loved to garden, loved flowers, and she was curious about unique species, and loved to embroider.  Jean loved her family dearly.

Jean was a 60 year member of The Order of Eastern Star Sligo Chapter and Clarion Chapter #267.  She also enjoyed the Homemakers Group when it met at the Scrubgrass Senior Center and made many friends there. Even after the group disbanded, she continued to attend the center.

She attended Old Zion United Methodist Church until her hearing became an issue; previously in her younger days she attended Cherry Run Methodist Church.

Jean is survived by  three children, Dolores Hughes and Edward J. (Terrie) Rumbaugh of Emlenton and Robert D. (Julie) Rumbaugh of Yorktown, VA; her “adopted” son, Eric Lighty, her friend and neighbor; six grandchildren, Larry Brunsgaard, Tawney (Darian) Murray of Grove City, Eddie Rumbaugh of St. Petersburg, Brandon Rumbaugh of Richmond, VA, Manda (Patrick) Turgeon of Newport News, VA, and Michael (Karen) Hughes of Dallas, Georgia; thirteen great grandchildren; a brother, Virgil R. “Sonny” (Shirley) Stewart of Huey and two sisters-in-law, Muriel Stewart and Anna Joan Stewart; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by a sister and husband, Betty and Paul Hinckley; two brothers, Earl and Wayne Stewart, and a son-in-law, L. Doug Hughes Sr.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 1204 Kerr Ave., Emlenton from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. Friday.  A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home with the Rev.
